GOSH is a complete health and safety system, brought to you by the folk at Working Wise. It has now been updated (hence 2.0), bringing it into line with the Health and Safety at Work Act. GOSH is widely used in organisations such as government departments, local government offices and DHBs, as well as medium-sized enterprises such as elderly care facilities, schools and kindergartens, and small businesses such as engineering and automotive repairs. We also have a system for soletraders.

Do you have a spare $3,000,000? That's how much you could be fined for a single charge under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (see Sections 47, 48 and 49).

The Act also introduces new liabilities for Directors and Managers, including prison sentences of up to five years. Failure to comply with the legislation in such a way that a worker is exposed to risk of serious injury could cost up to $1,000,000. That's right - you could be prosecuted even if no accident occurs! Typical fines range from $50,000 to $100,000, depending on your level of responsibility, and failure to report a 'notifiable event' can cost up to $50,000.

Further business risks arise from instant fines imposed by OSH inspectors (up to $4000), as well as the legal fees and mediation costs that accompany disputes and grievances. If suitable emergency procedures are not in place, your insurance company may also refuse to pay out on a claim. And if the media becomes involved, your brand and goodwill could be massively undermined.

But it's not just about managing commercial risk. Good health and safety practice offers proven benefits in terms of staff retention, engagement, innovation and productivity, as well as brand value. ACC also provides a number of incentives in the form of levy rebates for those who can prove they have taken health and safety seriously.

Above all other reasons, though, it's just the right thing to do. Imagine how you would feel if an employee were to be injured or killed, simply because you hadn't gotten round to putting a proper system in place.

Health and safety is not an expense, it is a savvy investment.
